Brisbane Broncos Face Personnel Crisis as Carrigan Faces Ban, Mozer Injured
Broncos Crisis: Carrigan Ban, Mozer Injury Add to Woes

Brisbane Broncos Personnel Crisis Worsens with Carrigan Suspension and Mozer Injury

The Brisbane Broncos' already dire personnel situation has taken another significant blow, with star lock Pat Carrigan now facing a two-match suspension for a high tackle on Tom Chester during Friday night's clash against the North Queensland Cowboys. This development compounds the team's existing woes, as they are already missing key players Reece Walsh and Ben Hunt due to injuries.

Carrigan's Suspension and Coach's Defense

On Saturday, the match review committee hit Carrigan with a grade two charge for the tackle, which could sideline him for two crucial matches. Carrigan has the option to challenge the suspension at the judiciary, but doing so carries the risk of extending his ban to three matches if the appeal is unsuccessful.

Following the Broncos' narrow 35-31 loss to the Cowboys, Carrigan attempted to downplay the severity of the incident, insisting it was merely a chest tackle. His coach, Michael Maguire, echoed this sentiment in post-match comments.

"It was chest," Maguire stated emphatically. "That's how I saw it. It is interesting because I thought it was a really good chest tackle."

Maguire praised his team's resilience despite the unfavorable result, noting that the side "really dug in for each other" amid what he described as "a fair bit of carnage."

Mozer's Devastating Injury and Hooker Shortage

Adding to the Broncos' mounting troubles, hooker Blake Mozer suffered a broken jaw during the match while attempting to tackle Cowboys powerhouse Jason Taumalolo. This injury will sideline Mozer for approximately six weeks, dealing a severe blow to the team's depth at the hooker position.

Mozer was making his first NRL appearance since 2024, coming off the bench in what was meant to be a promising return. Maguire expressed his disappointment at the development.

"It's a real shame," the coach lamented. "He has worked really hard and I thought he was going really good out there. We were all excited for him."

With other roster hookers Ben Hunt and Billy Walters also injured, the Broncos face a critical shortage at the position. This may force the team to turn to 20-year-old Cameron Bukowski, a highly rated development contract player who Maguire believes is ready for the opportunity.

"I've had a good conversation with a few of the boys and we think he is ready," Maguire revealed. "Cam has been battling away, fighting and working hard in the background. An opportunity might be around the corner."

Concussion Controversy and Additional Absences

The Broncos are also seeking to have the category-one concussion ruling for hooker Cory Paix overturned, given their escalating injury crisis. Paix was ruled out in the 45th minute of the Cowboys clash, automatically sidelining him for next Saturday's match against the Wests Tigers.

Maguire expressed confusion over the concussion protocols, particularly comparing Paix's situation to Mozer's.

"Blakey was a cat-one and gets given a cat-two. Paixy ran off, passed the test and got a cat-one. I don't quite get that," the coach said. "I think Paixy will be fine for next week. He was ready to run back out. That is a call made externally so I will go through the right channels with the doctors and review that one. Talking to Paixy, he can't believe it himself."

The defending premiers were also without halfback Adam Reynolds on Friday night due to a groin injury that is being managed on a week-by-week basis. This further depletes the Broncos' leadership and experience on the field.

Upcoming Challenges and Team Outlook

Brisbane faces a challenging fortnight ahead with matches against the Wests Tigers and Canterbury Bulldogs. The team must navigate these crucial games while managing:

  • Pat Carrigan's potential suspension
  • Blake Mozer's six-week absence with a broken jaw
  • Existing injuries to Reece Walsh, Ben Hunt, and Billy Walters
  • Adam Reynolds' ongoing groin issue
  • The potential absence of Cory Paix due to concussion protocols

As the Broncos work through these personnel challenges, coach Michael Maguire and his staff face the difficult task of fielding a competitive side while managing player welfare and navigating the NRL's disciplinary and medical protocols.
