Newcastle Secures Major World Cup Fixtures

Newcastle has been confirmed as a key host city for the upcoming 2026 Rugby League World Cup, with four major international matches scheduled for the Hunter region. The announcement, made official by tournament organisers on Sunday, follows initial reporting by the Newcastle Herald and solidifies the city's position on the global sporting stage.

McDonald Jones Stadium on Turton Road will be the centrepiece, hosting two significant double-header events during the month-long tournament. This places Newcastle among other major Australian host cities like Sydney, Brisbane, and Wollongong, as well as international venues in Christchurch and Port Moresby.

Match Schedule and Key Fixtures

The action in Newcastle kicks off on October 18, 2026, when Fiji's men's team takes on the Cook Islands. This will be immediately followed by a thrilling women's clash between Fiji and New Zealand, offering fans a full afternoon of world-class rugby league.

The stadium's role becomes even more critical during the finals series. On November 7, 2026, McDonald Jones Stadium will host a semi-final double-header, featuring one men's and one women's semi-final match. These games will determine which teams advance to the tournament's ultimate stage.

The entire 2026 Rugby League World Cup, which also includes a wheelchair division, is a massive undertaking. It will feature 26 teams from 14 nations competing in 53 matches over 31 days, making it the largest global showcase of the sport across its three formats.

A Boost for NSW and Rugby League Fans

NSW Premier Chris Minns welcomed the announcement, highlighting the state's deep connection to the sport. "NSW is the nation's heartland of rugby league, and this announcement ensures our fans will get to see the world's best players right here at home," Minns said in an official statement.

He added that the event is a "showcase of the game's growing global reach" and that hosting matches in regional centres like Newcastle allows more fans to participate in the international celebration.

International Rugby League chairman Troy Grant echoed this sentiment, emphasising the competitive nature of the upcoming tournament. "International Rugby League has never been more competitive and there will be genuine superstars across all groups and stages," Grant stated. He promised "a level of passion and intensity that very few events can rival."

The tournament officially begins on October 15, 2026, with a blockbuster opening match between Australia and New Zealand's men's teams at Sydney's Allianz Stadium. The championship finals for all divisions will be held at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium on November 15, 2026.
