Two kayakers were rescued in a dramatic sea operation off the coast of Townsville on Wednesday afternoon after being swept out to sea by strong currents.
Police launched the rescue mission around 3:30 pm after receiving reports that two people were struggling in the water near the mouth of the Ross River. The pair, a man and a woman in their 40s, had been kayaking when they were caught in a rip current and pulled away from shore.
Rescue Operation
Water police and the Polair helicopter were dispatched to the scene. Officers located the kayakers approximately 1.5 kilometres offshore, clinging to their overturned kayak. The helicopter crew directed the water police vessel to their location, and both individuals were safely pulled from the water.
Senior Constable Mark Thomas praised the quick response of the rescue teams. "The conditions were challenging with strong winds and choppy seas, but our crews were able to locate them quickly and bring them to safety," he said.
Medical Assessment
The kayakers were brought back to shore and assessed by paramedics. They were treated for mild hypothermia and shock but did not require hospitalisation. Both were described as being in good spirits despite the ordeal.
"They were very relieved to be back on dry land," Senior Constable Thomas added. "They had been in the water for about an hour and were starting to get cold. It could have ended much worse."
Safety Warning
Police have issued a reminder for water enthusiasts to check weather conditions and carry safety equipment before heading out. "Always wear a life jacket, carry a means of communication, and let someone know your plans," Senior Constable Thomas advised.
The rescue comes as the region experiences unsettled weather, with strong winds and hazardous surf conditions forecast for the coming days.
