Sony has announced it will cease production of physical game discs for its PlayStation systems within 18 months, marking a major shift in the gaming industry. The Japanese entertainment giant confirmed that from January 2028, all new games will be released exclusively as digital downloads, available through the PlayStation Store or via retailers selling download codes.
Consumer Shift Drives Decision
Sony attributed the move to a growing consumer preference for digital media over physical discs. In a statement, the company said: "This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today."
Impact on Gamers and Retailers
The decision is a blow for gamers who invested in consoles with disc drives, as well as for the pre-owned games market and video-game retailers. Piers Harding-Rolls from Ampere Analysis noted that digital downloads accounted for just 13% of game sales when the PS4 launched in 2013, but by 2025, that figure had soared to nearly 80%. "Inevitably there will be concerns from PlayStation gamers around various aspects of this announcement including choice, accessing older physical games on new consoles, the ability to collect physical games, and game preservation, however the purchasing trends of gamers are clear," he said.
Gamer Backlash
Many gamers expressed frustration online. One said Sony "hate you being able to sell your game, or not controlling every sale." Another called for legislation to ensure "actual ownership of digital goods, not just rent that they can take away." A third warned: "I don't think people fully realise how awful an all-digital future is going to be. You literally own nothing but a license to access content. That content can be modified or even removed without your consent at any time. If you ever lose access to your Sony account, that's it. You lose your entire digital library."
Grand Theft Auto VI Goes Digital
The announcement follows news that Grand Theft Auto VI, one of the most anticipated games in years, will be a digital-only release. Those buying a physical case in November will find only a download code inside.
PlayStation 6 Implications
Harding-Rolls said the move "almost certainly guarantees" that the PlayStation 6 will not arrive until 2028 at the earliest, and likely at the end of that year. He added: "At a minimum, the standard version of a PS6 will not include a physical media disc drive. Sony will be looking for all the ways it can reduce the cost of its next-gen console, and this is an easy win."
