A groundbreaking report has warned that museums and galleries across the globe are dangerously exposed to cyber attacks that could result in the theft of priceless digital collections and confidential information. The study, conducted by cybersecurity firm CyberGuard in collaboration with the International Council of Museums, found that 78% of institutions lack adequate protection against sophisticated hacking attempts.
Digital Collections at Risk
The report highlights that the increasing digitization of museum archives—including high-resolution images, 3D scans, and provenance records—has created new vulnerabilities. According to Dr. Emily Hart, lead author of the report, "The shift to digital has been essential for preservation and accessibility, but it has also opened a Pandora's box of security risks. Many institutions are operating with outdated systems that are easy targets."
In the past year alone, 43 museums reported cyber incidents, with 12 resulting in the theft of digital assets. The most common attacks include ransomware, phishing, and data breaches. The report notes that smaller museums are particularly at risk due to limited budgets for cybersecurity.
Impact on Cultural Heritage
The potential loss of digital records could have devastating consequences for cultural heritage. "If a museum's database of artifacts is wiped or stolen, it could take years to reconstruct, and some information may be lost forever," said James Miller, a cybersecurity expert at the University of Melbourne. The report also warns that cybercriminals could use stolen data to create forgeries or sell sensitive information on the dark web.
To mitigate these risks, the report recommends that museums implement multi-factor authentication, conduct regular security audits, and invest in employee training. It also calls for government funding to help smaller institutions upgrade their defenses. "Cyber security must become a priority for the cultural sector," Hart added. "The cost of prevention is far lower than the cost of recovery."
