Old Mill Theatre Secures 21-Year Lease, Ensuring Future for South Perth Arts Hub

The beloved Old Mill Theatre in South Perth has secured its future for the next two decades, with the City of South Perth locking in a landmark long-term lease that ensures the venue remains at the heart of the local arts scene. This decision guarantees the theatre's operation through to 2047, providing stability for one of the region's cultural treasures.

Council Approval and Cultural Impact

At its February meeting, the council approved a new 21-year lease for Old Mill Theatre, recognising the venue's significant cultural impact and the passionate community that supports it. Mayor Greg Milner emphasised the theatre's role as a cultural gem, stating it has been bringing stories to life for over 75 years.

"The Old Mill Theatre is one of South Perth's cultural gems and has been bringing stories to life for our community for more than 75 years," Mr Milner said. "This long-term lease gives the organisation the certainty it needs to continue nurturing local talent, staging great productions and keeping this historic venue thriving."

Historical Resilience and Community Contributions

Founded as an amateur theatre in the late 1940s, Old Mill Theatre has evolved into a powerhouse of community-driven performance, relying on more than 260 dedicated volunteers. The venue has shown remarkable resilience, recovering from a serious fire in 1983 that required extensive renovations, and by the 1990s, it was back in great working shape.

Today, the theatre draws strong crowds, staging over 40 Fringe World Festival performances in early 2026 and welcoming more than 12,000 people in 2025 alone. Its excellence was recognised this summer when it won the Fringe World Festival 'best independent venue award'.

Economic and Social Benefits

Beyond entertainment, Old Mill Theatre plays an essential role in energising the Mends Street precinct. It brings audiences into nearby restaurants and cafes, boosting local businesses, while creating opportunities for performers, directors, technical crew, and students. Mayor Milner praised the volunteers' dedication, noting their efforts ensure the theatre remains a welcoming stage for creativity and community connection.

"It's remarkable to see more than 260 volunteers contributing their time and energy to keep this theatre running," Mr Milner said. "Their dedication ensures Old Mill Theatre continues to be a welcoming stage for creativity, connection and community."

Future Plans and Upgrades

Old Mill Theatre chairperson Roger Farley welcomed the lease decision, highlighting its importance for long-term planning. "It is very much appreciated and assists us in our long-term planning to bring a fully diverse program of performances to the community," he said.

The theatre is now preparing for major upgrades, thanks to a $75,000 State Government grant and a $103,256 contribution from the organisation itself. These funds will support new seats and carpet replacement works, enhancing the venue for future audiences and performers.

This lease agreement not only secures the theatre's physical presence but also reinforces its commitment to fostering arts and culture in South Perth for generations to come.
