Chinese Woman Hospitalised After Alleged Racist Attack in Canberra
A 27-year-old Chinese woman has been hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries after she was allegedly subjected to racist abuse and a violent assault in Canberra, Australia's capital. The incident, which occurred on Thursday evening, has left the victim, identified only as KK Zhang, deeply shaken and reconsidering her sense of safety in the city.
Details of the Alleged Assault
According to police reports, Zhang was walking with a friend on Macdermott Place in Belconnen around 5:45 pm when the confrontation began. She claims that a teenage girl and a young boy, believed to be the children of the alleged offender, directed racist slurs at her, including mocking Chinese speech. In response, Zhang confronted the children and started recording the interaction on her phone.
At this point, a woman, who was not known to Zhang or her friend, allegedly approached from behind and grabbed Zhang's phone, sparking a physical altercation. The woman then repeatedly punched Zhang in the head, causing significant injuries. "She was punching me, and I think her nails scratched me — I ended up with a 5mm cut on my face and bruising on my arms," Zhang recounted, struggling to hold back tears during an interview with 7NEWS.com.au.
Escalation and Threats with a Knife
The situation escalated further when Zhang attempted to prevent the woman from leaving before police arrived. The alleged offender then retrieved a large knife, estimated to be 30 to 40 centimetres long, from a car and pointed it at Zhang while making threats. Fearing for their safety, Zhang's friend pulled her back to avoid further violence.
Despite this, the woman and her children fled the scene in a dark grey Ford Falcon sedan. "But even as they got into the car, they were still smirking at us and making rude gestures, including giving us the middle finger," Zhang said, describing the aftermath of the attack.
Injuries and Emotional Impact
Zhang was left "covered in blood" and taken to hospital for treatment. Her injuries included a cut on her face, bruising on her arms, bleeding from her left ear and nose, and blood-stained earrings. While the physical wounds are not life-threatening, the emotional toll has been severe. "I had always thought Canberra was safe, with not much violence, until I experienced this myself," she stated, expressing her shock and fear.
The bookkeeper, who has been living in Australia since 2022, said the ordeal has left her and her friend terrified to go out and wary of strangers. "Now both my friend and I are scared to go out and wary of strangers," she admitted, highlighting the lasting impact on her daily life.
Police Investigation Underway
Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing into the incident. Police are urging anyone who witnessed the assault or has information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via their website, quoting reference number 8345990. The alleged offender remains at large, and the community is being asked to assist in the search for the dark grey Ford Falcon sedan involved.
This case has raised concerns about safety and racial tensions in Canberra, prompting calls for increased vigilance and support for victims of such attacks.
