A Perth man has been sentenced to 12 years behind bars for what a Supreme Court judge described as a "prolonged and brutal" attempted murder in the suburban garden of a Willagee home.
Leon Kenneth Bropho, 35, launched a vicious attack on his partner in February 2023, stabbing her multiple times before repeatedly striking her head with a brick in a shocking act of domestic violence.
The Horrific Garden Assault
The court heard how Bropho's attack unfolded in the backyard of the Willagee property, where he first stabbed the woman before grabbing a brick and using it as a weapon against her head. The assault continued despite the victim's attempts to flee, leaving her with life-threatening injuries.
Justice Joseph McGrath described the attack as "sustained and ferocious," noting the victim suffered significant blood loss and multiple serious injuries that required extensive medical treatment.
Justice Served in Perth Court
In sentencing, Justice McGrath emphasized the severity of the crime and the need to protect the community from such violence. Bropho was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment, with a minimum of nine years before becoming eligible for parole.
The judge took into account Bropho's early guilty plea but stressed that the "gravity of the offending" demanded a substantial prison term.
Community Impact and Domestic Violence Concerns
This case has highlighted the ongoing issue of domestic violence in Australian communities. The brutal nature of the attack in a residential neighborhood has shocked local residents and raised concerns about family violence prevention.
Police praised the victim's courage throughout the investigation and court process, while domestic violence support services have reiterated the importance of seeking help for abusive relationships.
