The City of Joondalup is now offering cash rebates for reusable nappies and other household products, aiming to encourage residents to cut down on single-use waste. The initiative provides a 50 per cent rebate, up to $80 per household, for reusable nappies and nappy inserts. Additionally, residents can claim a 50 per cent rebate, up to $50 per household, for purchasing menstrual cups, period underwear, menstrual discs, and cloth pads.
Program Details and Budget
Acting Joondalup CEO Nico Claassen explained that the program is modeled after similar schemes in the cities of Stirling and Melville. “The reusable product rebate program reflects the city’s strong focus on waste reduction and long-term sustainability, encouraging lasting behaviour change and supporting the city’s broader vision of building a more sustainable, circular economy for the future,” Mr Claassen said. The city has allocated $13,000 for the program in the current financial year. Once all funds are used, the program will close to new applications.
Environmental and Economic Benefits
“Waste avoidance sits at the top of the waste hierarchy, and by supporting a shift away from single-use items to durable, reusable alternatives, we’re making it easier for our community to take meaningful action,” Mr Claassen added. He noted that reducing waste sent to landfill will help lower long-term waste management costs, conserve natural resources, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Future Assessment
After the first year, the program will be evaluated based on community uptake, performance, and overall outcomes. This assessment will determine future funding and continuation. Residents can find more information and apply on the City of Joondalup website at joondalup.wa.gov.au.
