Vietjet named most emissions-efficient airline in Southeast Asia
Vietjet tops emissions efficiency ranking in SE Asia

Vietjet has been recognised as the most emissions-efficient airline operating within South-East Asia, according to the 2025 Flight Emissions Review by Cirium, an independent aviation analytics firm.

Cirium Flight Emissions Review

Cirium's review analyses operational data from the world's 100 largest airlines, serving as a benchmark for the aviation industry. This particular assessment focused on flights entirely within South-East Asia, where shorter routes often pose greater challenges for fuel efficiency.

An insider noted that Vietjet's strong performance reflects its ability to optimise operations across aircraft, network planning, and load management.

Fleet and Technology

“A new-generation fleet underpins Vietjet’s emissions efficiency,” a Vietjet spokesperson said. “The airline primarily operates Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, including the latest NEO variants, which deliver approximately 15-20 per cent fuel savings compared to previous-generation models.”

“With one of the youngest fleets in the region, Vietjet continues to reduce fuel consumption and emissions per passenger — an increasingly important factor as Australia sharpens its focus on aviation sustainability and decarbonisation.”

Vietjet has also adopted advanced technologies to further cut emissions, including:

  • Flight data analytics platforms such as SkyBreathe — innovative “big data software” that helps airlines save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions.
  • Fuel optimisation initiatives like SFCO₂ — an app for pilots aimed at reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. It provides personalised diagnostics based on flight data analysis.

Growing Travel Demand

“As travel between Australia and South-East Asia continues to grow, emissions efficiency is becoming an increasingly important consideration for both passengers and the industry,” the spokesperson added. “Vietjet’s performance highlights how airlines operating short and medium-haul routes commonly used by Australian travellers connecting through Asia can reduce their environmental impact while maintaining competitive fares.”

Methodology and Results

The results are based on Cirium’s EmeraldSky methodology, which uses CO₂ per available seat kilometre (CO₂/ASK) as the primary metric. This reflects how much fuel an airline burns relative to the passenger capacity it operates.

According to the report, Vietjet recorded 64.5g CO₂/ASK, placing first in the South-East Asia intra-regional ranking. Singapore Airlines followed with 66.7g CO₂/ASK.

About Vietjet

Vietjet is Vietnam’s largest private carrier, currently operating 135 aircraft with nearly 600 more on order, including both wide-body and narrow-body models. The airline is a full member of the International Air Transport Association and holds an IATA operational safety audit certificate.

Vietjet flies direct from Perth to Ho Chi Minh City in about 6.5 hours. In early June, economy flights to Vietnam start from $262 one-way, with return flights from $266. For more information, visit vietjetair.com.
