McDougall Park Community Kindergarten Celebrates Six Decades of Learning and Community

A cherished community kindergarten in Manning is marking a significant milestone this month, as it celebrates 60 years of operation with a special reunion and open day. McDougall Park Community Kindergarten, affectionately known as McDougall Magic, will host its diamond anniversary event on Saturday, March 28, inviting past and present families to join in the festivities.

Since its establishment in 1966, the kindergarten has welcomed over 1500 children, making it one of Western Australia's longest-running community kindergartens. The institution has built a strong reputation for its play-based approach to early childhood education, which encourages children to explore, take risks, foster friendships, and learn through creativity and imagination.

A Legacy of Play-Based Education and Community Ties

Fang Law, one of the kindergarten's longest-serving teachers, emphasized the importance of the anniversary as a chance for families to reconnect with the place where many began their educational journeys. "McDougall families unite," Ms. Law said. "I encourage everyone to get their kindy friends together and come back to McDougall and celebrate our 60th anniversary. Bring your kindy cushions and any kindy memories you might have."

She added, "It is rare for a kindergarten to be as memorable as McDougall is to generations of families across the community. Kindy is as much fun today as our alumni will remember." The sentiment was echoed by South Perth MLA Geoff Baker, who recalled his own time as a student at the kindergarten, noting that returning to the site brings back fond memories.

Community Involvement and Facility Enhancements

The kindergarten operates with a dedicated parent management committee, which plays a crucial role in supporting the centre's operations and development. Over the years, this committee has helped fund and implement various improvements to the facilities, including:

  • Upgrades to the playground
  • Construction of a treehouse
  • Development of Mosey Island, named in honor of long-time educator Lynn Mosey

These enhancements have contributed to the kindergarten's enduring appeal and its ability to provide a nurturing environment for young learners.

Anniversary Celebrations and Activities

The free anniversary open day will feature a range of activities designed for children and families to enjoy together. Highlights include:

  1. Meeting the kindy's dragon mascot
  2. Exploring the centre's gardens and play areas
  3. Reconnecting with teachers and old friends
  4. Participating in a fundraising bake sale

The event aims to celebrate the kindergarten's rich history while fostering community spirit. The McDougall Magic Open Day will run from 10am to 12.30pm on Saturday, March 28, at 2 Canavan Crescent, Manning. This gathering promises to be a heartfelt tribute to six decades of educational excellence and community bonding.
