NSW Introduces Digital Birth Certificates for Young Residents in Australian First

In a groundbreaking move, hundreds of thousands of young people in New South Wales, aged between 16 and 21, can now access a digital birth certificate through the Service NSW app. This initiative marks an Australian first, specifically designed to streamline identity verification for those entering the workforce and navigating key life milestones.

Enhanced Security and Convenience for Key Applications

The secure digital document is approved for use in confirming identity during critical processes such as applying for work licences, including the Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) and Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG). Additionally, it facilitates enrollment in TAFE and applications for driver's licences, offering a modern alternative to traditional paper certificates.

NSW Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government, Jihad Dib, highlighted that the rollout follows a successful trial and targets young individuals embarking on significant life stages. "These are young kids that might be enrolling in TAFE, might be going for their driver's licence. So all the times that they might need their birth certificate, a really great group to work with, and they're super keen to get involved in this," Dib stated in a recent interview.

Advanced Security Features and Future Expansion Plans

The digital certificate incorporates advanced security measures similar to those used in the existing digital driver's licence available through the Service NSW app. "It's got that hologram. So rather than a still version of a PDF, it constantly changes. Also, once the data is used, it can't be used again. It can't be stored," Dib explained, emphasizing its enhanced safety compared to paper documents, which are prone to misplacement or unauthorized sharing.

The government selected the 16 to 21 age group for the initial launch due to their status as digital natives, expected to adapt swiftly to the technology. Officials plan to gather feedback from this cohort before expanding the service to other age brackets, ensuring a smooth and effective rollout across the state.

Eligible residents born in New South Wales can now download the digital birth certificate via the Service NSW app, providing a secure and convenient tool for identity management in various personal and professional contexts.
