One of Australia's most popular video game streamers believes Rockstar Games will deliver a title worthy of the immense hype surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI. Barring further delays, the new game is scheduled for release on November 19, just six months away. Players will explore a fictional reimagining of Florida, including a Miami-like Vice City, where they can cause chaos and adventure.
Record-Breaking Expectations
Expectations for GTA VI are sky-high, with few disputing that it could become one of the most anticipated entertainment releases in history, destined to smash sales records. Australian Twitch streamer Matthew Judge, known as DarkViperAU, told 7NEWS.com.au: "Rockstar does not miss when it comes to their mainline releases. The game will undoubtedly be good and break sales. No one with any sense believes otherwise." He added: "It isn't possible to make everyone happy, but I believe most fans will be happy with what they produce."
Industry Awe and Caution
Competing publishers and studios have openly discussed giving GTA VI a wide berth for their own releases at the end of 2026, wary of going head-to-head with the Rockstar behemoth. Given the success of 2013's GTA V, which generated $1 billion in sales within its first three days and ranks as the second best-selling video game of all time with over 225 million copies sold, such caution is understandable.
The first trailer for the upcoming open-world title has been viewed more than 278 million times on YouTube alone, with 93 million of those views in the first 24 hours after its December 2023 unveiling. A follow-up teaser in May 2025 has amassed 161 million views.
Expert Analysis
Dr Jacqueline Burgess, a game studies researcher at the University of the Sunshine Coast, told 7NEWS.com.au: "GTA VI is expected to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, releases in video game history. The GTA brand has a reputation for consistent, high-quality games that will hopefully continue."
Community Buzz and Leaks
Rockstar and its parent company Take-Two Interactive have remained largely tight-lipped about the game's true scale, leaving eager fans to theorise and analyse every small piece of information. Dr Burgess noted that online buzz is common for entertainment media with highly engaged fans: "Because so many people gather online, new information is shared and discussed rapidly."
In 2023, a 17-year-old hacker was sentenced after stealing early development footage and releasing it online in one of the biggest leaks in video game history, carried out using an Amazon Fire Stick, a hotel TV, and a mobile phone. On forums, it is common to read about people planning time off work to play the game. Popular content creator Bradley Colburn (theRadBrad) joked in one trailer that the "objective" is to "survive till 2026." In a dark twist, police footage from England showed 35-year-old Robert Richens sobbing that he would miss the game's release as he was arrested for murder; he was jailed earlier this year.
Streamer's Perspective
Judge, who has spent 13,000 hours on the single-player version of GTA V and 1,200 hours online, described Rockstar as being "in a league of their own." He said: "As a fan, my level of excitement is hard to express. I just want to finally see what Rockstar has been working on. As a gaming developer, they are in a league of their own—even on their worst day, they are still better than everyone else."
Take-Two Interactive is set to report its fourth-quarter and fiscal year 2026 results on Thursday, May 21, with speculation that GTA VI's third trailer may be released shortly after. Stream free on 7NEWS.
