Driver Dies in Hospital After Head-On Crash with Fuel Tanker Near Yass

A 42-year-old man has tragically passed away in Canberra Hospital after being involved in a severe head-on collision with a fuel tanker earlier this month. The incident occurred on Lachlan Valley Way in Kangiara, approximately 26 kilometres north of Yass, which is about an hour's drive from the Australian Capital Territory.

Details of the Crash and Emergency Response

Emergency services were alerted to the scene at around 6am on February 19 following reports of a two-vehicle crash. Upon arrival, officers from the Hume Police District discovered that a car and a fuel tanker had collided head-on. The impact caused the truck to roll onto its side, trapping both drivers inside their vehicles.

A spokesperson for NSW Police provided details on the response: "The driver of the car, a 42-year-old man, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to The Canberra Hospital in a serious condition." The truck driver, aged 52, was also treated at the scene and transported to the same hospital in a stable condition.

Hospitalisation and Fatal Outcome

The car driver, identified as a resident of New South Wales, remained in hospital for about two weeks before succumbing to his injuries. Police confirmed on Wednesday, March 4, that they had been notified of his death. The truck driver, who is from Canberra, is expected to recover.

Authorities have stated that inquiries into the crash are ongoing. NSW Police are urging anyone with dashcam footage or additional information to come forward and contact Yass Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Community Impact and Safety Reminders

This fatal incident highlights the ongoing risks on regional roads and underscores the importance of road safety measures. The crash serves as a somber reminder for drivers to exercise caution, particularly in areas with heavy vehicle traffic.

As investigations continue, the community is encouraged to support the police efforts by providing any relevant details that could assist in understanding the circumstances of the collision.
