A cleaner in Townsville has shared the harrowing details of his desperate attempt to save a driver from a burning car following a horrific crash. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when a vehicle crashed into a tree on Ross River Road, causing the car to burst into flames.
The Rescue Effort
The cleaner, who wishes to remain anonymous, was working nearby when he heard the sound of the crash. He rushed to the scene and found the car engulfed in flames with the driver trapped inside. Without hesitation, he attempted to pull the driver to safety, but the intense heat and flames made it nearly impossible.
“I just saw the car on fire and thought I had to do something,” he said. “I tried to open the door, but it was stuck. The flames were so hot, I could feel them burning my skin.”
A Desperate Battle
The cleaner described the scene as chaotic, with bystanders screaming and calling emergency services. He managed to break the window and tried to drag the driver out, but the flames forced him back. Despite his efforts, the driver succumbed to the fire before firefighters could arrive.
“I feel like I failed,” he said emotionally. “But I know I did everything I could. The fire was just too strong.”
Community Reaction
The local community has praised the cleaner’s bravery, calling him a hero for risking his life. A spokesperson for Queensland Fire and Emergency Services confirmed that the driver died at the scene. Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
“His actions were incredibly brave,” said a witness. “He didn’t think twice about putting himself in danger. He’s a true hero.”
The cleaner, still shaken by the experience, hopes that his story serves as a reminder of the importance of helping others in times of crisis. “I just wish I could have saved him,” he said. “But at least I tried.”
