MyWay+ System Glitch Leaves Canberra Commuters in the Dark on New Bus Timetable

MyWay+ System Failure Disrupts Canberra Bus Timetable Launch

A significant technical glitch in Canberra's MyWay+ public transport system has left commuters without access to real-time bus information on the very day a new timetable was introduced. The failure, described by authorities as a "data transmission issue," meant that the updated bus network schedule was unavailable through the MyWay+ app and Journey Planner on Monday morning.

Real-Time Information Blackout for Passengers

The system failure created considerable confusion for passengers who rely on digital tools to plan their journeys. With real-time bus tracking disabled, commuters were unable to determine whether their awaited services were running late, early, or on schedule. The ACT government confirmed that the problem extended beyond their own platforms, affecting map services operated by Google and Apple as well.

"The updated bus network is currently not available through the MyWay+ app or Journey Planner on Transport Canberra due to a data transmission issue," the government stated in a morning announcement.

Alternative Information Sources and Ongoing Issues

Transport Canberra advised passengers to consult static timetables available on their website or displayed at bus stops, though these resources only show scheduled departure times rather than actual service movements. The agency also provided a telephone assistance line for those needing additional support.

This latest malfunction represents just the most recent in a series of problems that have plagued the $64 million MyWay+ system since its controversial launch in November 2024. The system has faced persistent technical difficulties, including malfunctioning ticketing machines on buses and at tram stops from day one, and ongoing billing inaccuracies affecting some passengers more than a year after implementation.

Background of a Troubled Project

The MyWay+ system's troubled history was detailed in a damning report prepared by an all-party committee of ACT Legislative Assembly members. The report described the launch as "clearly not ready" and criticized multiple aspects of the project's execution with phrases including "poor decision-making," "questionable choice showing poor judgement," and "undertaken so poorly."

Following the report's publication, Transport Minister Chris Steel initially declined to apologize for the system's problems before eventually issuing an apology five days later, stating: "I reiterate the Chief Minister's comments that the MyWay+ rollout could have been smoother, and apologise to anyone impacted by the transition to the new service."

Timetable Changes and Government Response

The new bus timetable was implemented to accommodate traffic disruptions caused by construction work extending Canberra's light rail network to Commonwealth Park. While the schedule changes were necessary, the timing coincided unfortunately with the MyWay+ system failure.

Transport Canberra officials indicated they were working urgently with technology partners to resolve the data transmission issue. The ACT government emphasized their commitment to restoring full functionality to the digital services that Canberra commuters depend on for their daily travel planning.
