A significant police operation is underway in Lake Macquarie after a suspicious package was discovered at a bus stop, prompting the closure of a major road and a warning for the public to steer clear.
Authorities were alerted to the situation around 9:35am on Wednesday, receiving reports of an unattended and suspicious package near the Stockland Drive shopping centre in Glendale.
Officers from the Lake Macquarie Police District quickly arrived at the scene. After an initial assessment, they began securing the perimeter and have now launched a full-scale police operation, which was still active as of 10:30am.
As a result, Stockland Drive, which connects Lake Road to the busy shopping precinct, has been closed in both directions while investigations continue.
Police have issued a statement urging the community to avoid the area entirely. The operation is ongoing, and inquiries are being conducted.
Anyone with information that could assist police is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
