Arthur Fery and Katie Swan have powered into the second round of Wimbledon 2026, delivering a boost for British tennis on the opening days of the championships. Fery, a 23-year-old wildcard, defeated world No. 45 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-2, on Court 12. Swan, ranked 112th, overcame former top-10 player Caroline Garcia 7-5, 6-4 on Court 3, marking her first Wimbledon main-draw win since 2022.
Fery's Breakthrough Performance
Fery, who turned professional in 2023 after a standout college career at Stanford, showcased his powerful serve and aggressive baseline game. He fired 18 aces and won 82% of points on his first serve, according to match statistics. The victory is his first in a Grand Slam main draw, having previously fallen in qualifying rounds. “I’ve dreamed of this moment since I was a kid,” Fery said in an on-court interview. “The crowd was incredible, and I just tried to stay focused on each point.”
Swan's Resurgence
Swan, 27, who has battled injuries in recent seasons, produced a composed performance against Garcia, a former French Open semifinalist. She broke Garcia's serve three times and saved five of six break points. “I’ve worked so hard to get back to this level,” Swan told reporters. “To win here again feels amazing.” Swan will next face No. 8 seed Jessica Pegula, while Fery takes on No. 12 seed Hubert Hurkacz.
British Prospects at the Championships
Both players are part of a 12-strong British contingent in the singles draws, the largest since 2020. With home hopes high, their early success has energized fans at the All England Club. The Lawn Tennis Association has invested heavily in grassroots development, and Fery and Swan exemplify the emerging talent. As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on whether they can sustain their momentum against higher-ranked opponents.
