Andrew Barr Leads ACT Tourism Pitch for Vietnamese Students

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr is leading a delegation to Vietnam to pitch Canberra as a premier destination for tourism and hospitality students. The mission aims to attract more international students to the Australian Capital Territory, particularly those studying tourism-related fields, as part of a broader strategy to bolster the local economy and address workforce shortages in the sector.

Delegation Focuses on Education and Tourism Links

Barr, accompanied by representatives from Canberra's universities and vocational institutions, is meeting with Vietnamese education officials and student recruitment agencies. The trip underscores the ACT government's commitment to strengthening ties with Vietnam, one of Australia's key source countries for international students. According to Barr, the delegation will highlight Canberra's high-quality education institutions, safe environment, and unique tourism attractions as key selling points.

“We want to show Vietnamese students that Canberra is not just the national capital but also a vibrant, welcoming city with excellent opportunities in tourism and hospitality,” Barr said. “This delegation is about building relationships and showcasing what our city has to offer.”

Economic Impact and Workforce Needs

The push comes as the ACT faces a growing demand for skilled workers in the tourism and hospitality industries, which were hit hard by the pandemic. International students contribute significantly to the local economy, with education exports worth over $500 million annually to the ACT. By targeting students in tourism and hospitality, the government hopes to not only fill immediate job vacancies but also create a pipeline of talent for the future.

Data from the ACT government shows that international student numbers have recovered to about 80% of pre-pandemic levels, with Vietnam being one of the top five source countries. The delegation aims to further boost these numbers by promoting Canberra's unique offerings, including its cultural institutions, natural attractions, and high employment rates for graduates.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Vietnam is an increasingly important partner for Australia in education and trade. The ACT's initiative aligns with the federal government's efforts to deepen ties with Southeast Asia. Barr noted that the delegation is also exploring opportunities for student exchanges and research collaborations between Canberra institutions and Vietnamese universities.

“This visit is about more than just recruitment; it's about building lasting partnerships that benefit both countries,” Barr added. “We see great potential in working with Vietnam to develop the next generation of tourism leaders.”

Canberra's Unique Appeal

Canberra is positioning itself as a destination for students who want a more focused and less crowded study environment compared to Sydney or Melbourne. The city's strong job market for graduates, particularly in government and tourism, is a major draw. Additionally, Canberra's status as a safe, clean, and culturally rich city appeals to international students and their families.

The delegation will visit Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, meeting with students, education agents, and alumni. The trip is expected to result in several memoranda of understanding between ACT institutions and Vietnamese partners.
