Kaarla Wirren Fire Performance to Ignite Albany 2026 Bicentenary Celebrations

Professional fire artists and about 70 local young people have collaborated to produce Kaarla Wirren, a performance highlighting the importance of fire in Noongar culture. The one-off event will take place on May 16, 2026, at the Historic Whaling Station amphitheatre, with organisers hoping to attract around 1,000 picnickers.

Kaarla Wirren, meaning 'fire spirit' in the local Indigenous language, is part of Albany's 2026 bicentenary year program. The performance celebrates resilience and the deep connection between fire and the land. Fire, or kaarla, is a traditional and integral element of Indigenous people's relationship with country.

In October 2025, Mt Barker Community College announced the start of its Kaarla Wirren project, led by Southern Edge Arts in collaboration with Menang Elder Aunty Carol Pettersen and Noongar associate director Rachael Colmer. The five-week program explores the cultural significance of fire while celebrating strength, family, and connection to country.

Southern Edge Arts, which has been fostering creativity in young people since 1985, marks its 40th anniversary in 2026. Year 7 students participating in the project engaged in workshops combining dance, movement, and cultural learning.

Event attendees are encouraged to bring picnics, with local produce available from the Albany Farmers Market and the Albany Picnic Provisions Trail. The trail features producers such as Albany Boatshed Markets, Handasydes Strawberry Farm, and Wignalls Winery. Tickets are free but must be booked online.
