The conflict in the Middle East has now entered its third month, with a fragile ceasefire barely holding. The war has spread to Europe and escalated across the region after the United States and Israel launched air strikes against Iran, killing Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior leaders.
Operation Epic Fury and Global Impact
The initial strikes, code-named Operation Epic Fury, sent shockwaves through multiple sectors, including shipping, air travel, and oil. Rising energy costs and disruptions to business in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global trade hub, have been felt worldwide.
King Charles Addresses US Congress
In a historic speech to the US Congress, King Charles III hailed an “unbreakable” bond between the United States and the United Kingdom. The King’s visit marks the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence.
“For all of that time, our destinies as nations have been interlinked,” he said. “We meet in times of great uncertainty, in times of conflict from Europe to the Middle East, which pose immense challenges for the international community, and whose impact is felt in communities the length and breadth of our own countries.”
He also referenced the recent incident near the Capitol that sought to harm US leadership, stating with “unshakeable resolve” that such acts of violence will never succeed. “Whatever our differences, whatever disagreements we may have, we stand united in our commitment to uphold democracy, to protect all our people from harm,” he added.
The monarch reflected on the four-century-long relationship between the US and the UK, noting he “cannot help but think of my late mother, Queen Elizabeth.”
Addressing Global Conflicts
King Charles also addressed Russia’s war in Ukraine, calling for “unyielding resolve” in the defence of Ukraine and its people to secure a just and lasting peace. He referenced the UK AUKUS submarine programme “in partnership with Australia, a country of which I am also immensely proud to serve as Sovereign.”
The situation in the Middle East remains volatile, with ongoing live updates as the conflict continues to unfold.
